To be fair, they do suffer from queuing-down-the-corridor syndrome.
I suppose most siege maps in FE history tend to have that (FE6 is the worst offender) -- but there are ways to avoid that.
The main game maps are definitely better. And CH7 looks great. But then I've always been a big fan of challenging defense maps (FE7 CH13x comes to mind).
I don't think it works for FE7x balance either. Armor Knights, and in this game's case, Shaman/Sorcerer/Diviner's become pretty terrible classes on those more narrow maps. Units such as Magnus just become awkward on them.
It's to do with enemy AI too. If most enemies only attack if you're in range of them, it's just best to spam high mobility units. It's how FE has always been.
